July 2014 Makeover Challenge /

Are you looking for my 8BSBP Reveal?

Nothing like a challenge to boost your creativity! Discipline, too, though it doesn't work for me, not yet :)
I signed up for the July 2014 jewelry makeover challenge on the blog of LiliKrist of Personal Collection by Li.K.  One of the pieces had to be purchased and the other one - made by us. The timing was perfect - I had just dug out two pieces that needed an overhaul and I had so many ideas but it wasn't until a couple of days ago that I actually started working on them. Having ideas and sketches certainly helps, may be because my sketches look like scrawls and it's easy to pick up the one that makes sense :) Well, I had also made some elements in advance, I hope this counts :)

1. The Old Pendant /

I bought this (probably polymer clay) pendant in Arbanassi - a village that has preserved many historical monuments - XVII and XVIII century churches and examples of Bulgarian National Revival architecture (XVIII -XIX centuries) plus it is located close to the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396) - Veliko Tarnovo. It was hanging from linen thread (discarded long ago) but was too light to wear and I didn't like the thread. I kept it as a souvenir from a nice trip - it carries the Ancient Bulgarian symbol for stability and independence (that's according to the label, I'm not an expert). I designed an asymmetrical necklace with different jasper beads, red acai beads for color pop, a silver tone spacer combined with a bronze tone round bead and an intricately colored agate bead with irregular pear shape. The colors of the metal findings range from golden bronze to dark bronze. I finished the necklace with a thin leather cord and a clasp on the left side. Oh, and I covered the big hole of the pendant with a bead cap. I chose elements that complemented the ancient feel of the pendant - jasper has been used as a magical stone in many ancient cultures; metalsmithing is an ancient craft, hence, the metal findings; the shape of the silver tone spacer is reminiscent of ancient spears and the acai beads and leather cord are the organic element.

I couldn't help it and made a pair of matching earrings from faceted green moss agate, green jasper and carnelian chips. Again, I used metal findings with different colors.

2. Ribbons and Beads /

I made this necklace in November 2012. The problem was that the decorative ribbon dangles clustered in the middle and were uncomfortable to wear. It was about time I redesigned it. I alternated the ribbon beads with 12 mm black agate beads on a Shamballa cord and added light green crystals on both ends. I finished the necklace with a macrame clasp. The cord gave it incredible flexibility. Simple and stunning!

With each challenge, I try to learn something new. This time I played with asymmetry and mixing metal colors. Oh, and I used a finding in an unconventional way. I am so curious to see what everybody else made. Will be back with the list of participants, when available. UPDATE: here is the reveal of our hostess and you'll find the list of participants at the end of the post.

My Country Blog Hop - Bulgaria /

Are you looking for the 8BSBP Reveal ?

I was born and live in beautiful Bulgaria. I am half Bulgarian and half Greek. I love my country and also love traveling and discovering other beautiful places in the world. So when I came across Nanmade My Country Blog Hop, where the participants make something to represent their country, there is a reveal date and then everybody starts hopping, I signed up right away. The history of Bulgaria dates back to 681 A.D., when the First Bulgarian Kingdom was established ; the area has been inhabited since Paleolithic times; Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Slavs and Proto-Bulgarians have left their impact on our historical and cultural heritage. I can't pack everything in one post, so just this - Bulgaria is known for its sea and ski resorts, many historical places, ancient golden treasures, including the oldest on earth - 6000 years (here is a link to a related article in the National Geographic, you have to have an account to log in and read it). And if you play the video at the end of this post, you will listen to the Bulgarian folk song, included in the golden music record on board of Voyager. Imagine the sound of this voice in space!

Traditional clothing - just a bit of the enormous diversity of styles and colors - source

I made a necklace and included some traditional elements:
- I made the focal from a decorative ribbon and sewed some seed beads and gold tone spacers on it in a random pattern - it turns out, traditional Bulgarian embroidery is never symmetrical because of the belief  that symmetry is devil's work;
- I used gold tone coins - genuine gold coins are often part of the traditional Bulgarian jewelry;
- I mixed gold tone findings with copper color wire - I think it looks good :)
- I used red and black as my main colors because they are found in almost all styles and designs of traditional clothing.

And here you will find the reveal post of the hostess Nan Smith and the links to the other participants.
