Keep learning!

You know that sometimes I take jewelry making classes. I do that to not only see the technique live but also meet like-minded people. And it pays off with a very special feeling for a day spent well. I wrote about one of these classes here and today I am going to tell you about two more.

Circular brick stitch - those earrings had no luck (or was it me?). First, I got the weave wrong and lost precious time during the lesson. Then, at home, one of the bridges got torn and I had to take it all apart. Slightly frustrated, I put the work aside and pretended to not notice it for a couple of days. And, of course, forgot how it's done. The textbook and some videos helped with finishing the first earring. The second one took another week. Finally, you can see both in all their glory!

We learned how to use the ring mandrel and made a ring with wire wrapped beads. Also, we shaped two equal (now this was a challenge!) pieces of wire for earrings, using the same mandrel.

Chain maille - I couldn't memorize the technique but these earrings can get you hooked!

Brick stitch - simple and simply beautiful! The model for those diamond stitched elements was an asymmetric necklace with smokey quartz beads but as much as I liked it, I was thinking earrings.

The other two pieces are still UFOs.

I also took a one-day polymer clay course. I admit to trying this medium on my own but the results were quite pitiful. I didn't do well at the course either but, still, some of the items turned out nice :)

A withered flower brooch, perfect for my bread basket ;) OK, I admit I didn't succeed in shaping the petals, apparently, I need practice.

A pendant with colorful spirals that I smudged a bit and an extra bead.

A tribal necklace and my beads came out right. I also made two dangles from the extra piece.

Large beads in bright colors with lava effect.

I hope to make use of all I learned some day!

  1. I don't care what you say about the beadwork attempts, especially those first earrings - I think they're FABULOUS! I have no patience for working with those tiny beads. I did take a peyote class ages ago, but found that I didn't enjoy the process so I quickly forgot how to do it. Ha. I did enjoy learning Kumihimo though. I think you're right about taking classes though. It's always good to learn something new and meet like-minded individuals too. Keep it up!!

    1. Kumihimo is on my list, Hope, especially with beads. It's a miracle I finished this first pair - it gave me a hard time! I, too, find it tedious and forget the techniques. I use the simple ones to introduce diverse elements in my designs.
